Nausicaa - Boulogne. More than just an aquarium. A recognized world centre for marine life information. Nausicaa is well worth visiting as it appeals to all ages and is well laid out, with information in English. The exhibition starts with information on plankton and then moves on through studies of all sorts of salt water fish and sea mammals the colours and varieties of fish are huge. Among other exhibits there is a beautiful tropical lagoon, a shark tank and the opportunity to see sea-lions. This can easily entertain the family for the best part of a day if you watch some of the shows. Highly reccommended. La Coupole - Near St OmerThis large interactive museum was the planned launch site of the V2 rocket in WW2, housed in a concrete dome 5 metres thick which survived all Allied attempts to destroy it. La Coupole is mainly devoted to the history of the site but there are other excellent exhibitions including Life in northern France under German rule and the Conquest of Space. There is the opportunity to watch many different slide shows/films which can be watched in conjunction with an English commentary on free audio headset systems. Blockhaus d'Eperleques - Eperleques A very evocative and moving testament to the horrors of war. Here you can find a massive concrete building designed to launch both V1 and V2 rockets. There is an excellent commentary in English at key parts of the site along with detailed explanations on panels. The site remains just as it was in 1945. L'Ascenseur à Bateaux des Fontinettes - Arques This giant canal boat lift was built in 1888. It lifted canal boats up from the River Aa to the higher level Neuffossée canal. The lift replaced a series of 5 locks built in the 18th century. |
